I am grateful to a good column that got me started on this list; it was by Mini Racker on “7 Signs That Point To Kamala Harris Defeating Trump”. They are impressive signs, and I doubled her list with a few observations of my own:
Skewed Polling: Partisan polling firms, mostly on the Republican side, throw their results into the polling averages to give an overall picture of a Trump campaign that still has a chance. These firms include right-leaning pollsters such as Trafalgar Group—which incorrectly predicted the “red wave” in the 2022 midterm elections. Also, I note that the results of ‘investment polling’ have taken a sudden turn towards Trump with the appearance of some billionaire Trump backers.
Funding Fury: As noted earlier, the Harris campaign has now brought in more than a billion dollars in contributions – twice what Trump has pulled in over two years. That can buy a lot of ads and social media space. Further, 95% of that amount came from small donations of $200 or less. It’s like a replay of Obama’s small-grain breakthrough enthusiasm.
Economic Gains: The economy is booming and voters have put their trust in the Democrats as the party capable of delivering more results on home-buying, grocery-shopping and entrepreneurship.
Abortion Absolution: In my opinion the Number One issue – so far up that it’s a Cause, not an ‘issue’ - Kamala has run away with women’s support for her stand on Reproductive Rights. I’d love to see the male-dominated pollsters learn from their mistakes after this election. This is not the time to keep treating women as obedient pets that should be grateful for male attention. Decades ago that same enthusiasm shot through society with the advent of female voting - but men did not ‘give’ women the vote: women TOOK the vote. Power up! And now they will take back control of their bodies. I’d like, in fact, to see a woman-led initiative in the first session of 2025, to pass a motion that all men had to have vasectomies until his partner was willing to have a child. The outrage would be Tremendous! See what it’s like, right-wing morons? That turned into a rant. Sorry.
Enthusiasm For A ‘New America’: Instead of ‘First Black President’ with Obama, people are now excited about ‘First Woman President’ under Harris. She’s Black as well. Don’t know how to count a double win like that, but her rallies and appearances are spectacular.
Trump’s Dwindling Base: Trump’s support from white voters who didn’t go to college has dwindled from 33% to 27%. That could be especially relevant in the “blue wall” states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
Early Signs: in Michigan, in particular, in the Democratic strongholds of Detroit-area counties Wayne and Oakland, about 700,000 voters have requested absentee ballots—roughly half of the total number who voted in those counties in 2020. More than half of those voters have already returned their ballots, according to the state’s voting dashboard. Plus, the share of Black early voters has increased since 2020, and Harris’ support among Black voters far outpaces Trump’s.
Likeability: Harris‘ likeability rating is much higher than Trump’s and as the campaign moves along voters are becoming increasingly impressed with her. A solid majority of voters supports her, while only 38% had a favourable opinion about Trump.
Cancelled Events: Trump may be feeling that because of the real polling numbers (that he is not sharing), he has no chance of winning, so why kill himself trying to perform? In the past week alone he has had made a half-dozen cancellations, including events on CBS, NBC, CNBC, The Shade Room, and the NRA. He reportedly was ‘exhausted’, and we must remember that he is 78 years old his bedtime is probably…noon. He has fallen asleep in numerous events.
Trump’s Avoidance of Crowds: Perhaps not purposefully, but Trump has been appearing with smaller audiences as his campaign wears on.
Trump The Extremist: He is not a Republican, he is a revolutionary authoritarian , threatening political opponents and media figures who do not align with his view of TrumpLand. He has already launched threats against media who do not give up the names of their sources, and told political rivals that they are headed for jail. These are not the actions of a man playing with a winning hand.
Increasingly Out-Of-Touch Views: He disputed that electric cars were environmentally friendly and declared windmills a threat to the nation’s prairies, oceans and birds. It’s almost too bad that a hurricanes driven by Climate Change tried hard to erase Florida and the interior South. His past record puts people off: he boasted that his policies would reduce debt and then grew the national debt by 7.8-trillion to $31-trillion. Recently his MAGA folks said climate change was not man-made and then they accused the Democrats of aiming a hurricane at them.
Lagging Support By VIPs: Few ‘names’ have stood up and proudly said they were with Trump. 82 Nobel Prize winners just endorsed his opponent, Beyoncé will appear with Harris today, Taylor Swift, Matt Damon, Oprah Winfrey Molly Ringwald and Robert De Niro are among her supporters. Trump has Elon Musk and a few other tech CEOs – but not as many heavyweight financial guys as Harris.
Leakage From Supporters: Almost ten percent of Republican voters say they plan to support Harris this time around. No cross-over from the Democrats to Trump has troubled the polling waters. It’s like people are tired of the old Trump Show.
Yes, I know Trump has also been shot at by Republicans, but I don’t think that counts as support for Harris. They probably just wanted him to stop talking. Anyway, they were not serious attempts…they were more concepts of ideas for assassinations.
I will also avoid the temptation to list the number of in-your-face moments that the Harris campaign has pulled off, because we would run out of space and they don’t really count as a ‘popular will’ indicator…but I do smile when I see that the Democratic National Committee ran a billboard outside Donald Trump’s rally in Las Vegas last night emblazoned with the headline ‘I Need the Kind of Generals That Hitler Had’. Speaking of which, Trump got that wrong too. Hitler’s generals did not defeat France; a fluke whereby the Germans had to change their invasion plans at the last minute caused the French defeat. Germany’s generals in WW2 were about the same calibre as any other generals. Trump’s descent into fascism is becoming a liability to his cause.
Now take a leap outside the U.S. and think about what Kamala’s win will be like for world support for America.
People around the world are seeing the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India becoming the leader of the Free World. Only in America, you say. True. And that comes shortly after a black guy from Kenya with an Irish name (O’Hara…?) became president.
Speaking of other parts of the world, what is the world’s leadership model option – who can they follow if not the exciting democratic model?
They could mimic the Russian one whereby a leader who was bred in a kennel of pure ethnic nastiness who shot his way to power through his spy agency…who ‘won’ his election with 87% of the vote. It was so twisted that the UK’s PM sent him a ‘congratulations’ message hours before the polls closed in Russia. Leave it to the Brits to burn! Putin seemed restrained when compared to his North Korean colleague who also came from a ‘leaders kennel’ and got 99% of the ‘vote’. (and who the F*** would be crazy enough to be in that 1% that voted against him…?....maybe someone named ‘Spoiled Ballot’)
The alternative to dictatorship is the Harris model, not the Trump mode, of democracy. She is mainly running on a Constitutional support theme backed by an “I’m not Trump” sub-theme, which is persuasive to the center-right who have Trump fatigue.
After all, we remember this:
He’s going down, fourteen ways.
You can vote for it.
Thanks for this! So awesome! Take this Nate Silver!
Great job Barry!
