As an 80 yr old retired physician trying to manage aging, i don't quite share you optimism re: living forever. However, your well-written article did plant brain seeds. The title is boffo. Hope i get to live in Europe and you on the island. I like Kurzweil's "laws" to reach his conclusion. And, i am reminded of Yogi's: prediction is hard, especially about the future (paraphrase, i think). Thank you very much for stimulating my Poirot's "little grey cells". An old fart here!
I love this article because I love life and want to live a whole lot longer. I hope everyone will have access to this soon after it's developed. I awake right now because my two youngest grandsons are spending the night, and they woke me up. They're wonderful. I love watching the grandkids play soccer and growing vegetables and flowers, kayaking, and so much more that I don't have enough hours in the day. Part of that feeling comes from being 76 and fearing time is running out, although I feel great now.
You made me laugh again. "When this happens, it will upset a lot of people who hate life."
My husband/editor thinks I'm one of those people because I write about what's wrong with our country right now, but I do that to connect with others so that collectively, we can change it.
Thanks for the hopeful news and for introducing me to the Super Agers book. I'm determined to hang in there until they cure aging. Take care.
Well said, and you and I share a common age and common "grandchildren" interest. My own will be visiting in a month or so....looking forward to the racing and running!
I don't want to be an immortal or immortal - adjacent in a world where The Orange Psychopath & his moronic flunkies also have indefinite life spans. I'll take my chances with cholesterol, high blood pressure...
While I'm hopeful that this might actually eventuate, I'm extremely wary that it will be priced so high, made so exclusive that only the super rich will be the ones to enjoy the elixir of life.
This might end up producing a dystopia as seen in 'Altered Carbon' where the Methuselah's or Meths life on indefinitely, almost like vampires, never giving way to the next generation. Society might stagnate, atrophying, become a shadow of what it once was if no new life is going to follow on from the previous generation.
This could indeed, as you suggest, be a make-or-break situation for the wealth divide. Can you imagine what People would do if it was priced too high or otherwise withheld? Let the axes fall! In general, anything in a for-profit healthcare plan is priced Way too high. This could be the tipping point for Universal Health Care.
no interest in living forever or whatever. nor do I believe this. two things inevitable, death and taxes. And more medicine that I need to take? no thanks. If science can cure cancer, arthritis, and diabetes, I agree that people will live longer. Which always makes me think of the old Outer Limits episode where the earthlings were so afraid of this alien that I think they killed him, and burned a book he had given them. They opened the book and it started out - the following is a cure for cancer, and the rest was burned away. Silly humans. nice article sir.
What ever the view is of living on and on, I believe that science is the most exciting world we have. Better than science fiction, or a good mystery. I hope we get some sane folks back in the government so that funding for science is restored, and the freedom for pursing scientific questions is again paramount
Do you think the current unraveling, indeed the near stomping out of science in the U.S., will impact this timeline, or impact this set of ideas about future of life expectancy?
The life expectancy projects are spread out over so many different fields, in so many countries, that I doubt even Trump's incompetence can mess the advances up too badly. What I think will have a slightly bigger impact is the collapse of the AI market and the subsequent mess-up of the tools that catalyze the speed of adoption. I would be really annoyed if someone else's greed messed up our chances for life extension.
Great article and so interesting. It’s the quality of life that matters most to me. If I can live longer that’s a bonus. I lost my vision in left eye to due damage of the optic nerve. It would be nice to have dual vision again. 🥹

I already admire your choice of retirement location! And thank you for having an open mind...this is a big pill to swallow (as it were!) LOL!

Very well put!! Thanks!
It will be nice to restore science and facts as the truth. Hard to believe we have strayed so far.
Yes, that's the worst part about this digression.
Love that narrative! Sounds a bit like turning down a chance to live forever... LOL

Especially a bonus for the others in your Archery Class...
